THE FOUR STAGES

Four positions. One is irreplaceable.

If the 4C Mindset is how you think, the Four Stages are who that thinking makes you. Your judgment is one axis; your domain expertise is the other. Where they meet is your professional identity in the AI era. These are not a simple ladder - the most dangerous position is not the least skilled, but the expert whose skill has outrun their judgment.

Interpreter

Takes what AI produces and polishes the edges. Building both domain skill and judgment from the start - but for now, doing work AI itself can increasingly do. The commodity position, and the one most exposed to automation.

Augmenter

Deep expertise, but judgment about AI is still forming. The highest-risk position of the four: strong skills create false confidence, which makes AI's errors the easiest to miss. Here, competence is a trap, not a shield.

Orchestrator

Reads the organisational and political reality AI cannot see, and directs it. Prevents expensive failures before they happen, and turns tangled multi-party decisions into ones executives can actually make.

Weaver

Does not just make decision - shapes them. Asks why, whether it should be done at all, and what the cost of being wrong is. The irreplaceable professional, valued on the undesired outcomes they prevent and desired outcomes they create, not the hours they bill.
